Sculpture, because of its three dimensional nature, inherently confronts and challenges physical space. Objects constructed from abstract geometric form can express the metaphysical and explore symbolism. The body of work for the Jasmax exhibition "Elemental Formations" is an expression of exploring a space beyond what is apparent.
Creating a coherent body of work by finding continuity and natural progression in my practice has been paramount. It was equally important that each piece should relate to the others, yet stand on its own merits.
There are three layers to my sense of journey; a response to the nature of the exhibition space, my own personal exploration and thirdly, the challenges of physical assembly itself, which have led to innovation and forward movement. Absolute surrender to process has been essential, with a dynamic of revelation both in assembly and in meaning.
The range of materials and elements has been consciously limited to coincide with a monochromatic approach, as in the zero art movement, and to contribute to intensity and coherence in this series. Contemporary materials such as alluminium and lucite are juxtaposed with materials like brass and textiles which have a resonance from other time periods; these anachronistic elements act as a counter point and reminder of what lies beyond and behind contemporary culture. An admiration for the spontaneity found in some geometric sculpture in the Neo-Concrete art movement of Brazil has also influenced my enquiry.
Choosing materials with opposite characteristics is pivotal to the process. Contrasts in material, texture, shape and plane can create paradoxical associations.
The sense of opposition is a cherished opportunity for an interplay between the solid and the ethereal, the opaque and the transparent. Contrasting associations also subtly invoke archetypes such as the masculine and the feminine, the overt and the covert.
Different treatments,layering and the use of fine detail in an otherwise simple design contribute to inherent tensions. In this body of work, my focus has been on reconciling opposing forces in the assembly and design process,with an underlying strong resolve to reach for the metaphysical, and access a space of meditative stillness.
